As our large social studies theme in fourth grade is centered around Wisconsin, we will begin by building off of the third grade standards from last year. In third grade, our students worked on learning more about different countries and continents along with their cultures and geographical attributes. The start of our fourth grade year will help reconnect with those concepts, but also examine the earth as it was millions of years ago. We will take some time learning about how continents separated, continents drifted and how archaic people traveled. This will set the groundwork on HOW and WHY native people traveled to North America and then Wisconsin.
Along with that historical understanding, we will polish up our geographical vocabulary and work with maps in our first unit. Again, the first 3-4 weeks of school will set us (as a class) a common foundation of language, vocabulary and understanding to be able to work and talk together as classmates.
